J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are some of the most beloved pieces of literature of all time. And thanks to Peter Jackson’s epic and lovingly crafted movie trilogy (and less beloved but still entertaining never-the-less The Hobbit trilogy), the works of Tolkien are more popular than ever. A few years ago it was announced that Amazon would be getting into the world of Frodo, Aragorn, Gollum and the rest of our favorite characters with a TV show, but information on the show has been scarce ever since.
In the months following the announcement of the show, we’ve gotten a few pieces of information. We know that Amazon has so much faith in the show that they have ordered five seasons and left the option open for spin-offs. The first season, which is in production now, has a budget of almost half a billion dollars for all 20 episodes. To put that into perspective, the budget for a season of Game of Thrones was estimated to cost about $90 million. This is five times that cost. We also know that the show runners are working closely with the Tolkien estate to make sure that anything new they create does not contradict the rules and story Tolkien had already written. The show will take place during the Second Age, a 3,441 span of time that takes place millennia before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings take place at the end of the Third Age.
And now, thanks to the very first set picture and official announcement from Amazon, we know exactly when to pack our bags and wrap up our lembas. The currently untitled show will premiere thirteen months from now on September 2, 2022. Though it is quite the wait until we can enter Middle Earth once again, here’s hoping they are taking all the time they need to craft a story that will be well worth the wait.
