A recent Bloomberg article comments that Sony may be planning a potential gaming subscription service, code-named Spartacus. While details are limited, and it has yet to be confirmed, Sony seems to be considering merging PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now in three different tiers. This could open the possibility for fans to play new titles as well as re-play classic PlayStation games from past consoles. Enter Microsoft Game Pass.
Game Pass is a marketable asset for Microsoft, allowing players a chance to sample various games, new and old, for a monthly fee. One could argue that it helps sell the console; however, does Spartacus have what it takes to compete with Game Pass?
There are several factors to consider. Sony is famous for its strong first-party franchises like Tomb Raider, Uncharted, God of War, The Last of Us, Ratchet and Clank, and Horizon. Fans are also ravenous to play PlayStation 1 and 2 games. This is where Sony may be at an advantage. On the flip side, it is unknown if Sony will release any of their exclusives (or any game) on day one like Microsoft is willing to.
Both titans in gaming have their own strengths, and only time will tell if Spartacus has the strength to rival Game Pass.
