PlayStation owners might receive their gaming subscription service next year. With a story-breaking tweet from Jason Schreier, he reports for Bloomberg that Sony Group Corp’s PlayStation division is planning on their own gaming service to compete with Xbox Game Pass, code-named Spartacus.
He reports that Spartacus would include a three tier subscription that PlayStation owners could choose from. For a monthly fee, players will be allowed to play modern and classic games with the highest tier including PS1, PS2, and PSP games. The service will also merge PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now together, with intentions to phase out PS Now. PlayStation Plus will continue to go on as a yearly subscription.
No further details have emerged, but it’s rumored to come out in February. With Horizon: Forbidden West releasing in the same month, it could be true, and with The Game Awards approaching on December 9th, we may see it there in a reveal.
With Game Pass being a major success for Microsoft and the Xbox brand, Sony could give them a run for that subscription money with the wealth of IP from their first-party library and exclusive third-party games that have not appeared on other consoles. At this time, it’s a rumor–so before taking it as fact, you might want to hold on to that season salt before pouring.
