Boss Rush Banter: Should PlayStation Make Another LittleBIGPlanet Game?

Today, January 18th, is the eleventh anniversary of LittleBIGPlanet 2, which launched on the PlayStation 3. For those of you not familiar, the LittleBIGPlanet games started out as the original Super Mario Maker for the PlayStation console–a platformer that gave gamers the tools to create inventive and unique platforming levels that could then be shared across the world. With LittleBIGPlanet 2, developers Media Molecule took the concept to the next level and allowed different genres of game creation, including racing games, shooters, fighting games, and more.

There hasn’t been a proper LittleBIGPlanet game since 2014, and with each main game in the series receiving less glowing reviews than the one prior, there’s really no surprise why the series has taken a bit of a pause. That’s not to say it has been completely dormant, however, with the excellent Sackboy: A Big Adventure releasing as a launch title for the PlayStation 5 just last year, though the entry was strictly a platformer with none of the creation tools the series has been known for in the past.

LittleBIGPlanet has essentially skipped the PlayStation 4 lifecycle, meaning the technology behind PlayStation consoles has increased dramatically since the last mainline release. Which begs the question–should PlayStation make another proper LittleBIGPlanet game?

In my opinion, I’d say no. The LittleBIGPlanet games are fun and unique, and give me that Mario-like shot of adrenaline that is missing from the PlayStation line-up, but they are often bloated, over-stuffed, and way too complicated to just pick up and play. Sure, they are great platformers, but they lack the level of polish that a mainline Mario game or even Super Mario Maker contains. What I’d personally love to see is more spin-off games like Sackboy. To be fair, though, I’m not really into creation games and just want a polished and fun platformer. So, maybe this series just isn’t for me.

What do you think? Has there been a long enough wait since LittleBIGPlanet 3 to warrant a LittleBIGPlanet 4? Let us know in the comments or on our Discord.
