Gaming is a great way to unwind, relax, and escape to a new world for a stretch, until that game does the opposite.
Sometimes video games can raise your blood pressure and heighten your heart rate when you are furiously working to achieve a tougher end goal. These end goals come in many forms including secret bosses or dungeons, post-game levels, and even the game itself.
If you’ve been gaming for a while, odds are you’ve encountered one of these achievements where the biggest reward is an insanely bloated sense of accomplishment. That sense is usually better than anything the game can give you.
So, what is the hardest gaming achievement you’ve completed?
I recently completed a playthrough of the 3D platformer Sackboy: A Big Adventure and the game, in and of itself, wasn’t too difficult. There was, however, a section that always was a big challenge: the Knitted Knight Trials.
These were levels set aside of the main path and were timed trials through an obstacle course. Each trial had bronze, silver, and gold achievements with time standards for each.
These levels were tough because they required precision platforming along with speed in order to get the gold achievement. I worked my way through them just fine, but that unlocked the final trial: the Ripsnorter.
This final trial was a marathon run similar to Super Mario 3D World‘s Champion’s Road. It combined all of the previous 15 trials into one course and you needed to complete it all in under 10 minutes to achieve gold.
The time wasn’t the challenging part, it was the platforming.
Sackboy only gets two bits of health before he dies so you can only afford one hit. If you die by falling or damage, you have to start all over again.
There were many times I would make it to the ninth section only to fall and have to begrudgingly go back to the beginning. There was one time I finally beat the level but didn’t do it under 10 minutes and silver just isn’t good enough.
Overall, it took me about five days and maybe a total of 10 hours to finally complete this one spot. It was frustrating and stressful, but once I hit gold, nothing felt sweeter.
I didn’t care that all I got was a virtual trophy. I had finally conquered the Ripsnorter and no one would ever take that away from me.
Yes, it’s ridiculous to get this hyped about a fake trophy. That’s why the sense of accomplishment is a wild emotion, especially for tough achievements.
What about you? What is the toughest achievement you’ve completed in gaming? How long did it take you? Do you still brag about it today? Let us know in the comments below or head over to our Discord channel to join the conversation.
