It seems that the battle for acquisitions is continuing in 2022. Just two weeks after the industry shattering news that Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard, Sony struck back this week hitting long-time Xbox fans where it hurts, and has acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion. Though the sticker price of the studio isn’t quite as shocking, Xbox fans will feel it somewhere else, as once Microsoft owned studio and the creators of Halo are now playing for the other team.

This deal seems to be more than meets the eye however, as Bungie and Sony both assured fans of the popular MMO shooter, Destiny, and all future Bungie projects, will remain multiplatform, staying on current platforms and developing for new ones in the future. The goal of the sale looks to be looking beyond video games.

An official statement from Bungie reads:

“We will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games. We will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.​” It’s been confirmed that Bungie’s games will remain multiplatform — but obviously that could all change in the future with new projects.

What’s more, Bungie is framing this like it’s a huge deal for the company. Its statement continues: “In SIE, we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence that beats in Bungie’s heart. Like us, SIE believes that game worlds are only the beginning of what our IPs can become. Together, we share a dream of creating and fostering iconic franchises that unite friends around the world, families across generations, and fans across multiple platforms and entertainment mediums.​”

Bungie is continuing to be aggressive about recruiting for the future of Destiny, their new IP Matter, and their unannounced multiplayer project. The influx of cash from Sony will indeed help that recruitment. The studio announced last summer that they want to expand and become a staple as a global multimedia company, expanding their IP into more than just video games. With Sony’s ambitious push into movies and TV alongside their long term contract with Netflix, their goals seem aligned there as well. But rest assured Guardians, you won’t have to purchase a new console to continue your journey. For now.
