Live-Action God of War Series Might Land on Amazon Prime

If the rumors are true, Amazon Prime might become home for a live-action adaptation of one of the most popular video games of all time, God of War.

Deadline revealed in an exclusive article the news of the possible pick up by Amazon Prime Video which, according to sources, states that Prime Video “is in negotiations for a live-action TV series”. The series adaptation appears to prospectively be helmed by The Expanse creators/executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby and The Wheel of Time executive producer/showrunner Rafe Judkins as well as Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions, which collaborate on all TV series based on PlayStation games.

PlayStation Productions is the new movie and TV subsidiary of Sony’s gaming division. Under its tutelage, the studio has brought Uncharted to the big screen and is also beginning work on adaptations for The Last of Us starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey and Twisted Metal starring Anthony Mackie and Will Arnett.

The God of War franchise launched in 2005 on PlayStation 2 from Sony’s Santa Monica Studio and spans a total of seven games across four PlayStation consoles. Central to the storyline is ex-Spartan warrior Kratos who embarks on a perilous journey to exact revenge on Ares, the Greek God of War. After becoming the ruthless God of War himself, Kratos finds himself constantly looking for a chance to change his fate.

Santa Monica Studio would soft-reboot the franchise with the 2018 game entry on the PlayStation 4. In it, Kratos comes to the Norse wilds where he gets a second chance at fatherhood with his son Atreus. The follow-up to God of War (2018), God of War: Ragnorok is currently in development and is announced to release later this year on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

Video game adaptations are hot right now – both The Witcher and Castlevania have been huge hits for Netflix. Paramount Plus is bringing a series based on popular Xbox franchise Halo to audiences.

Amazon Studios has been focusing a lot of attention on adapting new TV series from video games. It has Killer Films’ upcoming TV series Fallout, starring Walton Goggins and it is said to be developing a Mass Effect series adaptation.

Time will tell if Sony and Amazon will go forward on bringing God of War to the small screen. There’s also no news on whether the series will follow Kratos’ exploits in either the Greek or Norse mythology of the franchise’s timeline. We will be sure to keep you posted when new information comes available!
