Firesprite Studio Making Triple-A Horror Title for Sony

2–4 minutes

Firesprite Studio, which was recently acquired by Sony, appears to be hard at work on a triple-A game for the publisher.

Over on Resetera a user shared a job listing from the UK-based studio via Firesprite’s website. The listing is for a narrative director for a horror game project that is currently in development and will be running on Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.

From the job listing: “We are looking for a narrative director to join our development team for a AAA narrative-driven horror-adventure game in Unreal 5.”

“The narrative director is responsible for the project storytelling, helping establish & consider the game’s universe and lore, with responsibility for the quality implementation of narrative content for project milestones and ultimately the game’s release.”

Firesprite is a video game developer that had formed in 2012 by former members of Studio Liverpool. Founded by Graeme Ankers (Managing Director), Lee Carus (Art Director), Chris Roberts (Technical Director), Stuart Tilley (Game Director), and Stuart Lovegrove (Programming Director), the company would create quite a few titles for Sony including The Playroom (PS4), The Playroom VR (PS4), and PS Vita’s Run Sackboy! Run!

In September 2021, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that the studio had been acquired. Later that same month, Firesprite announced that it had acquired Fabrik Games, the company responsible for the 2018 game The Persistence.

The company is already being put to good use by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Firesprite is currently co-developing Horizon Call of the Mountain for PlayStation VR2 in collaboration with Guerilla Games. Horizon Call of the Mountain is a spin-off of the Horizon series. It has also been reported that Firesprite has taken over development for the Twisted Metal reboot that was under development by Lucid Games and had also poached Lucid’s game director.

Over on the job listings page, there are also calls from Firesprite for numerous roles referring to a “multiplayer action” game leading people to speculate even more that it could be for a new Twisted Metal game as one of the roles being sought is for a “senior designer: vehicular handling”.

It has also been reported that Matt Southern, the director of various Motorstorm games, and the original person who pitched Drive Club, left his role as game director at Lucid in January to take on the same role at Firesprite.

It’s not clear at the moment if this new project is related to an existing Sony horror game property or whether it is a new IP.

As of now, we are all left to speculate what Firesprite and Sony Interactive have up their sleeves but when news does come up, be sure to check back with Boss Rush for all of the details!

What could Firesprite be working on for Sony? Would you like to see Firesprite work on a continuation of an already established PlayStation franchise or create a brand new IP? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
