The long anticipated revamped model of PlayStation Plus just launched in Asian markets, with the service coming to Japan, the Americas, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand over the course of the next month.
One of the major features of the new service is that it has combined PS Plus with PlayStation Now, a subscription that once allowed players to play a multitude of games on-demand. What makes this even more exciting is that PlayStation promised that more than 700 games would be available for the highest tier of subscriber (Premium), which includes numerous games from PlayStation’s past consoles.
Some of these classic games will have modern enhancements, such as improved frame rates, higher-quality resolution, the ability use save states, rewind, and change the interface. It’s not clear yet which titles will have these enhancements and which do not, but it’s exciting that the prospect is there to begin with.
Also, if you have already purchased the digital version of these classic games, you will have instant access to them on your PS4 and PS5 regardless if you have PlayStation Plus or not. That’s wonderful news!
Now that the service is live in Asia, we can get a clearer picture of what to expect when it goes live in our own markets.
While there’s plenty of quality titles now available, the sheer number seems to be lacking, as the current total of 269 games falls far short of the promised 700.
It should be noted that currently PS3 emulation is not being offered on the Asia marketplace, as it relies on streaming from the cloud to do so. Still, it’s hard to imagine that we’ll receive nearly 500 PS3 games to make up for the deficit when it comes to other regions.
What is good is that Nick Maguire on the PS Blog has given us a preview of what PS3 games will be available at launch, thus I’ve listed those down below, too.
Lastly, PlayStation had promised time-limited trials for some games, allowing players to download the full game, and play for up to two hours. The playtime counter only counts down while you are in the game, and any trophies and save data will carry over should you purchase the title.
