Who is ready to head back to the world of J.R.R. Tolkien? We’ve been hearing a lot about Amazon’s prequel series, Rings of Power, but today the streaming service dropped the first full trailer, and there is a lot to unpack:
Set during the Second Age of Middle-earth, Rings of Power tells the story of the rise and fall of the island kingdom of Numenor, which features heavily in the new trailer. We meet several new characters and locations, but there are a few key returning characters that Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit fans will surely recognize, including Galadriel (Morfydd Clark, portraying a younger version of Cate Blanchett’s character from the films), Elrond (Robert Aramayo; Hugo Weaving’s younger self) and Isildur (Maxim Baldry), the man who was briefly glimpsed in the opening scenes of The Fellowship of the Ring, who is famous for cutting off the ring of power from Sauron’s hand.
Though not much is known to the general public about the Second Age, Tolkien fans can rest easy knowing that Amazon has the approval of the Tolkien estate, and while they have the freedom to imbelish upon some of the histories of Middle Earth, they cannot change any major events or deviate from the trajectory of the stories we all know and love.
From this first glimpse of the show, it looks to be a faithful continuation of the visual world established by Peter Jackson’s blockbuster trilogy (and less-beloved Hobbit trilogy), which is a very exciting (and relieving) prospect. The 8-part first season premiers on Amazon Prime on Friday, September 2, with new episodes releasing each week.
