The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is off to a hot start.
Nielsen recently revealed streaming data for the week of Aug. 29 through Sept. 4 and The Rings of Power earned the top spot, outpacing fellow fantasy show and Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon.
The report showed The Rings of Power garnered almost 1.3 billion minutes viewed. House of the Dragon garnered 781 million minutes viewed during this term to finish fifth overall, revealing ratings war between the shows in the early goings.
Nielsen only measures minutes viewed on TV screens and not other devices. The company also only measures U.S. viewers.
There are some caveats to consider with this data.
The Rings of Power debuted its first two episodes at 9 p.m. EDT on Sept. 1, meaning the show was only available the later half of the measured span.
By contrast, House of the Dragon debuted its first two episodes prior to the measured window. Furthermore, the show’s third episode debuted a few hours before the window closed on Sept. 4.
House of the Dragon is also split between HBO, which Nielsen doesn’t account for in this measurement, and HBO Max. The Rings of Power is exclusive to Amazon Prime Videos.
The results didn’t only focus on these two fantasy shows. The Netflix comedy movie Me Time finished second with 927 million minutes in its first full week of streaming.
NCIS (812 million minutes) and Game of Thrones (792 million minutes) finished third and fourth on the list ahead of House of the Dragon.
Others in the top 10 included Devil in Ohio (716 million minutes), Cocomelon (693 million minutes), Grey’s Anatomy (674 million minutes), Stranger Things (667 million minutes), and Echoes (627 million minutes).
As noted, this is not a perfect measurement nor an exact measurement of the budding rivalry. Still, it provides some excellent third-party insight into viewing habits.
Regardless of where it sits compared to other shows, The Rings of Power boasting 1.3 billion minutes viewed in half a week is no easy feat. Amazon banked heavily, literally, on this show and early indications show it may have paid dividends.
