Star Fox is a beloved franchise with one fantastic game accompanied by a number of other disappointing titles. Star Fox 64 is praised heavily as one of the best Nintendo 64 games of all time. It’s 3DS remake is one of my most replayed 3DS titles, and it was the first game I fired up when the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack first launched Nintendo 64 games. However, Nintendo has had a much harder time breaking the mold of this one good game, as no other Star Fox entry has ever come close to being as memorable or well-loved as Star Fox 64. Fans have been burned by high expectations for games like Star Fox Adventures for GameCube or Star Fox Zero for Wii U. If Nintendo announced a new Star Fox project, would you be optimistic for a great successor to Star Fox 64, or pessimistic, expecting another surefire failure?
On one hand, with the number of mistakes they’ve made, you would imagine Nintendo knows what to avoid in a future Star Fox game. It’s become clear that Star Fox 64 is the gold standard, so how hard would it be to just… do that again? With some entries in the series having such negative reviews, it seems hard for Nintendo to outdo themselves and make an even worse Star Fox game, so maybe there’s hope that they’ve learned from their mistakes, and Nintendo can finally make a game that can live up to fans expectations.
…Or it could be the last nail in the coffin. With how poorly received titles have been since the Nintendo 64, maybe there’s no hope saving that downward spiral. It’s hard to imagine the games getting worse, but some fans may have had their dreams crushed one too many times that any game being up to standard may seem impossible.
Since showing up in the Nintendo Switch version of Starlink: Battle for Atlas and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, we haven’t heard a word from Nintendo about Star Fox, and maybe we never will. There’s a chance Star Fox is just done and will only continue to live on in remakes and virtual consoles.
Maybe there’s hope. Maybe we’ll see a return to the Lylat System and get to experience Star Fox in its prime once more. Maybe we’ll get to soar through the skies of Corneria again in our own Arwing, doing plenty off barrel rolls.
What do you think? Do you trust Nintendo to make another Star Fox game? Or should the franchise be forgotten, leaving behind only one truly great game? Let us know in the comments below, or join the conversation on the Boss Rush Discord.
