Video game developer CD Projekt RED has announced that a remake of the original Witcher game is officially in development. The action RPG was the first game ever for the developer, who has gone on to make The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077.
The studio stated that the game will be rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, and that Polish developer Fool’s Theory will be heading the project.
Adam Badowski, Head of Studio at CD Projekt RED, stated on the official The Witcher blog:
The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD PROJEKT RED. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger. Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games. And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait.”The Witcher
Earlier this year, CD Projekt RED revealed the game as codename “Canis Majoris.” It was described in October as a “full-fledged Witcher Game, separate to the new Witcher saga” and would be “developed by an external studio”.
CD Projekt RED has made clear that the game is in the early stages of development, so it will be quite a while before more details will be revealed.
Originally released in 2007, The Witcher was a major hit for the then small game developer. The story follows witcher Geralt of Rivia as he attempts to regain his memory and hunt down the villainous Salamandra group. An Enhanced Edition of the game released in 2008, featuring all new adventures, gameplay, and technical upgrades.
Developer Fool’s Theory was founded in 2015 and is based in Poland. The staff is comprised of former CD Projekt RED members who had worked on the original Witcher game from 2007. Their first title, Seven: The Days Long Gone, released in 2017. They have also contributed to the games Baldur’s Gate III, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Outriders, and Gord.
Fans wanting to experience the original game can claim a free copy by signing up for the GOG newsletter.
