Boss Rush Banter: What Classic Zelda Item Do You Hope Makes a Return in Tears of the Kingdom?

After The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was revealed, I decided to go back and play Ocarina of Time since it’s been forever since I played it last. I haven’t played a ton of Zelda, and after playing Breath of the Wild, I’ve a hard time going back to other Zelda games that aren’t as expansive or ambitious. But I’ve noticed that while Breath of the Wild is insanely open and has a plethora of items and tools at your disposal… some classic items seem to be missing. Which items deserve a comeback?

One common item in Zelda games is the Hookshot, which is completely lacking from Breath of the Wild. The Hookshot allows you to traverse around the area, pulling you up a mountainside or across a chasm or body of water. Breath of the Wild already gives you tons of mobility options like Revali’s Gale that can help out with exploration, but remember the impact the Paraglider has on Breath of the Wild’s exploration? With Tears of the Kingdom involving lots and lots of lateral movement with floating islands, maybe a Hookshot will be just the tool we need.

Another thing I want to see are boots. Think like the Iron Boots in Ocarina of Time that let you sink down to the bottom of the water, or the Pegasus Boots in games like Link’s Awakening or A Link to the Past that let Link quickly charge forward, allowing him attack enemies, jump long distances, or unlock secrets hidden behind walls or up in trees. Breath of the Wild included clothing for the head, chest, and legs. It only seems natural that adding “feet” would be another great way to introduce more clothing options as well as new abilities.

The last thought I had was something like the Transformation Masks from Majora’s Mask. Being able to turn into a Zora and traveler Hyrule’s lakes, rivers, and waterfalls would be such a blast, and just imagine rolling around Death Mountain as a Goron. You could also include masks for other races like the Ruto or Korok, or enemies like Bokoblins, Wizzrobes, or even a Guardian like in Age of Calamity. Maybe make them have limited uses or a time limit with a recovery period, but masks could definitely shake up gameplay in major ways.

What’s your favorite Zelda item? Do you hope to see it make a comeback in Tears of the Kingdom? Let us know below, or hop over to the Boss Rush Discord to join the conversation!

Hookshot is definitely the best answer. Perhaps there could be a return of any of the musical instruments? In particular, I could see there being a return of the original flute (or LttP) that is used to warp you to different parts of the map.
