Stranger Things VR Coming to Major VR Platforms Winter 2023

Netflix has announced that a new VR title based on their hit sci-fi horror franchise Stranger Things is currently in development, and scheduled to arrive on all major VR platforms in winter 2023.

Stranger Things

Developed by Tender Claws, Stranger Things VR has players control Vecna, the powerful psychic villain from the show’s fourth season. The game’s description states that gamers will explore unknown realities, form the hive mind, and invade the minds of others in a quest for revenge against the character Eleven and the city of Hawkins.

While the teaser trailer doesn’t show much gameplay, there does seem to be a good deal of puzzle solving involving your psychic powers, as well as duals against the demogorgon monsters and Eleven, one of the show’s child protagonists.

Stranger Things is a Netflix original series created by the Duffer Brothers. Set in the 1980s, the show follows an ensemble cast of child and adult characters as they confront a haunting realm called “the upside down,” along with other horrifying mysteries.

The first season aired in July 2016, with the most recent fourth season being split into two parts, arriving in May and July 2022, respectively. A fifth and final season is in the works, but with no set premiere date.

This isn’t the first time Stranger Things has had a video game adaptation. In 2017, Netflix and BonusXP released a free mobile tie-in game for iOS and Android devices. A second game, titled Stranger Things 3: The Game, and also developed by BonusXP, coincided with the release of the show’s season 3 premiere in July, 2019. A third title by developer Next Games, Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales, came in 2021.

Developer Tender Claws is an art and video game studio best known for their projects involving VR and AR technology. Their most well known projects include the hybrid novel Pry, the narrative VR games Virtual Virtual Reality and it’s sequel, the AR virtual pet Tendar, and the immersive theatrical adventures The Under Presents and Tempest.
