Game developer and publisher Supermassive Games has teased the latest installment in their acclaimed interactive drama survival horror series The Dark Pictures Anthology.
A short trailer for the new game, a sci-fi thriller titled Directive 8020, appears after completing The Devil in Me, the final game in “season one” of the anthology series.
The Devil in Me actually releases tomorrow, November 18, but because nothing can stay secret for long on the internet, many are already posting videos of the short teaser.
The preview for Directive 8020 begins with a mission report from an abandoned space vessel called Cassiopia that is apparently on a mission to find a new home for humanity. The camera then pans over some destruction, followed by a floating bloody astronaut’s helmet. The transmission is interrupted then by another character, who states that one of the crew members is not acting right, and is trying to kill him.
From this information, one may gather that this new game draws heavy inspiration from the Alien franchise, as well as the horror classic The Thing. In The Thing, a shapeshifting extra terrestrial impersonates various members of a research crew, slowly picking them off one-by-one. The secluded nature of being trapped in space is also highly reminiscent of many Alien movies, which sees a creature called a xenomorph hunt down members in a dark, lonely ship.
An interesting tidbit is that “Directive 8020” is actually the name of a real life NASA directive, issued for the possibility of “biological contamination control for outbound and inbound planetary spacecraft.“
The Dark Pictures Anthology released it’s first episode in August 2019, and consists of a total of four games, not counting the upcoming Directive 8020. These titles include: Man of Medan, Little Hope, House of Ashes, and The Devil in Me. A VR spin-off title, Switchback VR, is planned for release in 2023.
Supermassive Games has come to be known for their excellent interactive drama survival horror titles. In addition to The Dark Pictures Anthology, the studio have also developed Until Dawn, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, The Inpatient, and The Quarry.
