Boss Rush Banter: Is Game Pass Worthwhile?

3–4 minutes

With Xbox’s noticeable absence from The Game Awards, some on social media have declared a state of emergency for Microsoft’s gaming division, arguing that the company must have a successful 2023. For some, the gaming giant’s commitment to Game Pass is enough to justify consumer support.

The ability to play games from a massive library without having to constantly purchase them is a huge perk. For those on a fixed income or who are limited in the time they get to play games (that’s us parents!), Game Pass offers a rare experience in the consumerism-dominated twenty-first century: the gaming equivalent of a “free lunch.” Yes, consumers pay a monthly subscription fee, and it’s true that games are only available while they are offered on the service; but for many, the trade-off is well worth it.

Personally, I’ve had to take a step back from purchasing new games. With two kids, two full-time careers, and an active home life, I can’t justify spending $70 every time I was to try a game. Far too often, I’ve been disappointed after a purchase and am left finishing a game out of a sense of duty or obligation. That is disastrous when my time to game is already so limited. If not for Game Pass, I’d probably end up replaying games I already know and love, but would miss out on a lot of what’s new.

A great example is my recent download and playthrough of Ghost Song, a Metroidvania that recently came to Game Pass. I would certainly have never purchased the game for full price, likely not at all, if not for Microsoft’s subscription service. Instead, I downloaded the game out of curiosity and have found one of my favorite games of the year.

I know that Microsoft has disappointed a lot of folks this year, myself included. I think it’s important that the company represents itself well in 2023. But I’m grateful for Game Pass and will continue to remain a loyal Xbox customer.

Tell us what you think! Is Game Pass still worthwhile? Let us know in the comments or join in the conversation on Boss Rush Network’s Discord and Facebook.
