Winter levels tend to get a mixed reaction from players for a variety of reasons, but I’ve always found winter-themed bosses to be interesting.
I fall into the crowd that doesn’t like winter levels as I hate not being able to walk without sliding around. That said, winter-themed bosses tend to be unique in their approach to combat and can provide some fun battle sequences.
What’s also great about these types of bosses is they are not consistent, allowing for a more enjoyed experience because you don’t see them as much. Winter levels aren’t always present in games like forest or fire levels.
So, which winter-themed boss is your favorite?
I lean toward Blizzeta in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. The Snowpeak Ruins are actually one of my few winter levels I enjoy and Blizzeta is a reason why I like it.
You actually meet her prior to fighting her as she is Yeta, the wife of the Yeto. She leads Link to the second Twilight Mirror shard and turns on him as the power of the shard possesses her.
What makes this boss crazy is you don’t actually see her very much. A lot of the appearances come reflected from the icy floor below.
This boss was a lot of fun and the music was fantastic, capping off a great level.
Another winter-themed boss I’ve always enjoyed is Thardus from Metroid Prime. Phendrana Drifts is a lot of fun to explore and has some of the most relaxing music in the game, but Thardus disrupts all of that.
This boss is a large rock monster set in a snowy cavern. The beast launches ice beams at Samus that can freeze her. Another wintry power Thardus uses is it can call down a winter storm to obscure it from Samus.
I’ve always enjoyed this boss on all my playthroughs of this game. I love the environment and fighting Thardus in a first-person view helps immerse me in combat.
There are many great winter-themed bosses out there that provide for a lot of fun experiences. Even if a winter-themed level isn’t your favorite, you may have a fun boss waiting at the end.
