A couple of months ago a teaser trailer fought its way through the algorithm to my eyeballs, and I have probably thought about it a few times per week since. It was for an upcoming game called The Forever Winter. And it hits.
Now, As a huge FromSoft fan, one aspect of those games’ culture I’ve always bounced off of is their pervasive lore mongering. Entire cottage industries on YouTube have cropped up around telling stories which those games refuse to. But if I’m going to deeply ponder an item description for some broke down old battle ax, I’ll usually just keep that to myself.
For some reason, though, The Forever Winter had me googling every bit of info I could glean. It was involuntary, almost. After that teaser, I absorbed what was available. When another, more recent trailer dropped, I was surprisingly bummed it didn’t leave a longer trail of fresh crumbs to eat up.
When it comes to games, you can’t swing a tyranid by the tail without hitting a post-apocalyptic shooter, so why does this one have me shoved up against my locker by the shirt collar? I think it’s this guy:

Whoever he his, his look is the intersection of Warhammer 40k and the BK king helmet from Elden Ring. And I’m here for it. Plus, if you follow the links to the trailers above, you’ll see that the warring factions in this world strike a heady, dark sci-fi tone. Giant hunterkiller ships ala The Terminator drop zombie bombs on mecha that move around like Reagan from The Exorcist. Some kind of techno wizard wearing a skeksis skull monitors the situation. And all the humans of The Forever Winter can do is scrounge around and react to the situation like that deadmeat nightmare muppet in the pic.
Yep. I’m keeping this game on my radar.
