Now that the dust has settled from the February Nintendo Direct, many Zelda fans have picked apart the new trailer. From the general consensus I’ve seen and heard…we still don’t know much about Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Sure, endless theories abound; however, Nintendo has yet to reveal the main story and the game’s “hook”. Given that we are less than three months from this AAA, first-party title’s release, could we possibly get a Zelda Direct between now and May 12th?
Here are other games within the last few years that got its own Direct:
- Splatoon 3 (August 2022)
- Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (June 2022)
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons (October 2021, February 2020)
There were also Directs solely focused on Super Nintendo World and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Given how little information we have on Tears of the Kingdom, I believe we should have at least a mini-Direct for the game; however, I personally doubt Nintendo will produce a Direct for just Zelda. A game-specific Direct grants more focus on an upcoming release, but I noticed that they seem to be on “secondary” titles and not their guaranteed home-runs like Mario, Zelda, or Kirby. There have been many Directs on the Animal Crossing, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Splatoon franchises. Nintendo knows that Tears of the Kingdom will be a commercial success, so there’s no need on their end to produce its own Direct. It is also likely Nintendo wants to spoil as little as possible in order to differentiate Tears of the Kingdom from Breath of the Wild.
Would it be nice to have a Zelda-only Direct to learn about Tears of the Kingdom and even get a roadmap for future Zelda projects like ports or remakes? Yes. Will Nintendo invest the time and money for it? Likely not. But I’m happy to be proven wrong!
