March 10th is considered Mario Day (Mar10), and each year Nintendo does a little something to celebrate their most beloved mascot. This is a big year for Mario, too, with Super Nintendo World opening in Universal Studios, Hollywood and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, Nintendo extended another offer to celebrate Mar10: A Nintendo Switch Mario Choose One Bundle. That’s right, for $299.99 USD, you can purchase a standard Switch with one free Mario game. In its sixth year in its life cycle, is this offer just another sign that the “Switch 2” or “Switch Pro” isn’t coming anytime soon?
Rumors of a Switch Pro have been around for years, and many of us have given up on them. Last year, the Nintendo Switch only passed its supposed mid-life cycle, according to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa. Even a Bloomberg report in January suggested that Nintendo is ramping up production as the chip shortage is recovering from the pandemic and in anticipation for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
And yet, other “sources” feel that we are nearing an announcement of a new console. The latest was backed by Centro Leaks that 4Chan predicts the next Switch will release later this year. The fuss comes from the fact that 4Chan accurately predicted things that were announced at the recent Pokemon Presents.
But, back to Mario. It does feel a little odd that this package comes with the traditional Switch and not the OLED. I believe the choice to sell the traditional version speaks volumes to Nintendo’s confidence in their current console and has no intention of releasing another iteration this year, and perhaps next year. Of course, this is speculative as well, but to me, “actions” speak louder than words.
