Daredevil: Born Again reportedly has its Punisher.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Jon Bernthal, who portrayed the character during the Netflix series The Punisher, is joining the cast of the Disney Plus show. This would reportedly set Bernthal to return alongside other returning Netflix Marvel actors Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio.

Marvel Studios has not confirmed the report as The Hollywood Reporter clarified it did reach out to the studio for comment. The report is based on sources for THR. 

While Bernthal is reportedly set to make his return, The Hollywood Reporter also claimed Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson — who played Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, respectively, in the Netflix Daredevil series — will not return to the cast.

Frank Castle is a former Marine who saw his family murdered at the hands of gang members. He turns into a vigilante who isn’t afraid to kill in his quest for justice. 

Bernthal debuted his iteration of Frank Castle/The Punisher in the second season of Daredevil. He became the star of a spinoff series called The Punisher, which debuted on Netflix in 2017.

The Hollywood Reporter asked Bernthal in 2021 about the prospect of joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Castle. Bernthal had said if he did, he would hope the character would retain the grittiness of the Netflix portrayal. 

“I think if there’s any let up on that character, you do a disservice to the character, to every iteration of the character, to every comic book that’s come before, and to all of the unbelievable fans of the character,” Bernthal said to THR. 

Daredevil: Born Again is slated for a spring 2024 release on Disney Plus. Echo, which is slated for this summer, will likely set the stage for next year’s Daredevil show as both Cox’s Matt Murdock and D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk are set to appear alongside Maya Lopez-actress Alaqua Cox.

This show looks to draw inspiration from the 1986 classic comic book arc of the same title. In that story, Fisk discovers Daredevil’s identity and systematically breaks down his life as Matt Murdock. After the fall, Murdock returns as Daredevil to confront Fisk.

Frank Miller wrote the arc while David Mazzuchelli drew the comics. Many consider the arc to be one of the best comic book stories of all time.
