PAX East 2023: Gori: Cuddly Carnage Adds to the Argument that Video Games With Cats Are Awesome

Imagine if the orange cat from Stray had a hoverboard and developed a blood lust for zombie unicorns and other creepy toys. Interested? Well, that’s the impression I got when I played the demo for Gori: Cuddly Carnage at the Wired Productions booth at PAX East 2023.

While I joke about the comparison to Stray, you do play as an orange cat in a post-apocalyptic, neon-lit city. However, that’s where the similarity ends as Angry Demon Studio ratchets it up with a fast-paced ‘skate’ and ‘slasher’. During the demo, I platformed around the city and took down enemies. Yes, there are zombie unicorns and all those creepy toys that used to give you nightmares. It was fast-paced, easy to maneuver, and just a bloody good time. It wasn’t bogged down with any unnecessary details or controls.

Now, Angry Demon Studios is known for their horror games, and they stick to that theme. Despite the cuddly cat and existence of unicorns, there’s an unsettling environment to explore. I’ve seen spray paint of “death to all humans”–and you slowly uncover what exactly happened here. And it wasn’t pretty.

This dark, heart-pumping slasher was a joy to demo, and I look forward to its release sometime in 2023 on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One and Series X & S, and PC.
