We are officially one week away from the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the ambitious and long-awaited animated collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination, the studio responsible for the Minions movies, among others. Everything we’ve seen so far seems to indicate that we are in for a treat when we journey to the Mushroom Kingdom next week, regardless of how you feel about the mustachioed-plumber’s voice.
Now that the cat is out of the bag when it comes to adapting Nintendo franchises to (seemingly) successful movies, which character should get a movie adaptation next?

The obvious answer, and one we’ve discussed quite a bit, is that Nintendo should focus on a spin-off from the Super Mario Bros. Movie and make either a full Donkey Kong movie featuring the returning Seth Rogan as the king of swing, or a spooky adaptation of the wildly popular Luigi’s Mansion franchise, with Charlie Day reprising his role as the lanky Mario brother. We’ve already seen hints at other Mario-adjacent franchises in the trailers released thus far, with classic Donkey Kong being referenced, to scenes that look straight out of a Super Smash Brothers game and even a bit with Luigi running from Dry Bones’ into a spooky building.
Not everything needs to be an interconnected universe, however. I’d be totally fine with Nintendo exploring some other, non-Mario franchises, and bring several of their IPs to the big screen, never even connecting any of them. The Legend of Zelda series could be a fantastic franchise set in the fantasy genre and Metroid could bring a more mature, horror-esque feel to the historically family-friendly studio.

What movie would you like to see Nintendo tackle next? Personally, I’m hoping for a Luigi’s Mansion spin-off, but we’d love to hear your thoughts. Share your reactions in the comments below or join in the conversation on Boss Rush Network’s Discord and Facebook.
