Do you know who I can’t stand? Gifted musicians that can also write. Ever since learning in college about the musicians who wrote a rap battle explaining the economic boom and bust cycle as explained by John Maynard Keynes and F. A. Hayek, the envy and jealousy by that amount of talent fuels me with just enough rage to attempt a writing career. This has especially exploded in the video game fandom. With the amount of content creators inspired by the medium, there is no shortage of songs about the biggest franchises and the most obscure side characters. Who is your favorite video game inspired musician?
We all know how YouTube works. The algorithm feeds you a handful of videos catered to your hobbies and habits, basically acting as digital comfort food. But every now and again, you’ll get a music video based on an obscure video game that does a great job of explaining the game mechanics, story, and themes, all in three choruses. That’s why I love these kinds of creators. To cram in lore, gameplay, and references, all while rhyming the entire time, that level of effort and creativity is awesome.
The first one I really noticed come through my Spotify playlists was Dan Bull. Based out of the UK, Dan Bull became known for his raps about Skyrim and Minecraft, among many others. What I like about Dan Bull is how he can create the same atmosphere from the game in the music he creates. My favorites cover Untitled Goose Game, the Borderlands series, and the original Bioshock.
The other musician who’s making waves for me is The Stupendium, also based out of England. While the music strays a bit further from the theming of the game, this makes the newly created piece stand out a little bit more. Plus, a lot of the videos are also full production shoots, which is a crazy high level for someone who does YouTube for a living. Having a Patreon credits list as long as an actual movie production company only helps matters. Also, The Stupendium can do the really fast rapping, which will always impress me.
