DC Studios’ upcoming Blue Beetle got its first trailer, showcasing Xolo Maridueña in the lead role of Jaime Reyes.
Blue Beetle is slated to release Aug. 18 as part of a four-film lineup set for theaters this year. This will be the first film following the reboot of the DC Universe with The Flash serving as the catalyst for the change.
The trailer shows Reyes’ life and how he comes in possession of the Scarab, a mechanical beetle that provides Reyes with a metallic suit. Viewers get a good glimpse of Reyes in the Blue Beetle suit as well as the powers it holds and Reyes’ attempt to harness its powers.
There was also a tease of the villian Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon) as she claims the Scarab is hers and she will get it back. Viewers also get a good look at the Reyes family, including Jaime’s uncle Rudy (George Lopez).
There was no mention of other DC heroes in the trailer except at the end when one of Reyes’ family members calls Batman a fascist.
Maridueña comes to Blue Beetle after a breakout appearance in Cobra Kai as Miguel Diaz. Other cast members include Bruna Matquezine, Harvey Guillén, Raoul Max Trujillo, Elpidia Carrillo, and Damián Alcázar along with Angel Manuel Soto directing.
The Blue Beetle trailer comes on the heels of mixed reviews for Shazam! Fury of the Gods as well as behind-the-scenes controversy surrounding Black Adam.
Blue Beetle will also be the second DC Studios movie released this summer as The Flash eyes a June 16 release. It will also not be the last DC Studios of the year as Aquaman and the Los Kingdom is set for Dec. 25, capping off a four-movie slate in 2023.
Blue Beetle will also not be part of the first chapter of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC plans, but will help build toward that gameplan.
