HBO Max And Discovery to Merge As ‘Max’

2–3 minutes

Warner Bros. Discovery plans to relaunch HBO Max under a new service called “Max,” offering customers a mix of Discovery+ and HBO Max content.

Following nearly a year of speculation, The New York Times reported that the long-awaited merger of the HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming services will take place in May or June of this year. The new app will be named “Max,” and it will cost around $16 per month, similar to what HBO Max already costs.

What this means for existing HBO Max members is unclear, as plans for moving subscribers have yet to be published. Even after Max is launched, Discovery+ subscribers will still be able to use their subscriptions.

We’ll have to wait until Wednesday for more details since the Times reports that Warner will have an announcement event.

Some of the major aspects of this merger that remain unclear are what content from each app will survive on the combined streaming service and how current HBO Max subscribers will be grandfathered in, if at all—the Times reported that there would be cheaper versions of the service, including an ad-supported tier. So you don’t have to pay $16 monthly if you don’t want to.

While this may be excellent news for Warner stockholders, fans of HBO Max may be concerned about what this implies for the service. HBO Max is widely recognized as one of the greatest streaming services available, owing to its emphasis on high-quality movies and television. However, taking “HBO” out of the moniker and incorporating Discovery’s more reality-focused repertoire might dilute the offering.
