Boss Rush Banter: How Do You Balance Your Life and Playing Video Games?

3–5 minutes

I feel like I speak for a lot of people when I say I find it difficult to play all the games I want to with my schedule. I have many things to do in a single day, especially while working a full-time job. There’s cleaning that needs to be done, food to be cooked, and random errands to run.

So, how do people balance their life and playing video games? Many video games require extensive hours of playing to complete, and even shorter games still require a few hours to invest into the game for the best experience.

Even then, there’s burnout to consider where people are just exhausted at managing everything and don’t even have the energy or motivation to play video games.

I’ve found a way that best works for me in balancing out my day-to-day life and the time I want to use to play video games. My usual shift at work doesn’t start until the afternoon, so most mornings I am free to do as I please. Usually, I use that time to clean and cook for the day.

Since I wake up pretty early, I also have about an hour or two of free time. With this time, I’m logging into Genshin Impact to do my dailies as well as Honkai: Star Rail. They’re the two games I really invest my time into, but when it’s a workday, I’m just quickly going through what needs to be done for the day and logging off.

After doing that, I have another game of quick dailies I do: Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. I’ve been slowly working my way through the game in hopes of writing a game review, but it’s grown to be a much larger game than I was expecting, especially since my first impression of it was that it was a mobile, gacha spinoff of Octopath Traveler. I’m still greatly enjoying it though.

By the time I’ve gone through all this alongside my daily chores, my morning is over, and it’s time for work. During my breaks and lunch, I’m typically just looking for something to do, so I’ve found myself using idle games to pass time. I’ve been playing Legend of Slime: Idle RPG War for this since it’s more interactive compared to other idle games I’ve been playing, so it feels like a much better investment of my time.

On days I don’t work, I’m typically spending more time on Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, going through missions and stories. If I’ve gotten myself a new game however, I instead invest a lot of my time into that, utilizing my free day to play it.

Just two weeks back, the game I was doing that for was Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator. I am terrible at playing horror games, but I wanted to challenge myself, so I took up to finally playing the game.  Safe to say, I haven’t gotten to the true ending for that game.

I haven’t felt burnt out by this kind of “schedule” of playing games yet. There are definitely days where I simply don’t play at all. Interspersing my time like this has made my days much brighter, honestly, being able to indulge in my hobby but never in such an overwhelming manner.

I think playing a different range of games certainly helps. I’m getting a nice mix of games and taking my time in experiencing them. This made it feel less like a chore or that I’m simply going through games to get through it.

How do you balance out your day-to-day life and playing video games? Do you have a sort of schedule like I’ve developed or do you simply use whatever time you find? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below or the Boss Rush Discord!
