PlayStation Showcase Highlights Numerous Titles Headed to Sony’s Consoles

A host of first- and third-party games took centerstage during the May 24 PlayStation Showcase, providing players a glimpse at several of the game heading their way.

The showcase featured trailers and first looks for numerous game from Sony Interactive Entertainment as well as other developers, including gameplay footage of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The stream was almost an hour and 15 minutes and featured over 30 games.

Along with the trailers and announcements, The PlayStation Blog also provided in-depth looks including screenshots and interviews with the developers.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Features Kraven the Hunter and Other Elements

Insomniac Games showed off the sequel to its 2018 Spider-Man game, highlighting gameplay and characters in the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Kraven the Hunter is slated to be a villain in the sequel while the lengthy trailer also showed Dr. Curt Connors, also known as The Lizard. Gameplay looks to have Peter Parker and Miles Morales working in tandem though Parker appears more aggressive thanks to his black symbiote suit.

No official release date is set for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 except for a window of fall 2023. The game looks to be solely for PlayStation 5.

Final Fantasy XVI Trailer Showcases Story and Combat

Final Fantasy XVI is less than a month away and Square Enix released another trailer called Salvation, focusing primarily on the story.

It featured clips of protagonist Clive Rosfield and his interactions with the world of Valisthea and other characters. There were also a good showcase of the combat and some of the enemies players will encounter throughout their adventures. The Eikons, or Summons from previous games, also featured during the trailer along with their stylized battles.

Final Fantasy XVI is slated for a June 22 on PlayStation 5. It will carry a six-moth exclusivity with the console.

Bungie Unveils Revamp of Shooter Game Marathon

It’s been almost 30 years but Bungie is bringing it’s shooter series Marathon back with a new wrinkle.

The inaugural game, which released in 1994, was a first-person shooter. This latest entry will be an extraction shooter. The Marathon series has had three previous titles with the latest coming in 1996.

There is no official release date, but the game will drop on PlayStation 5 as well as Xbox Series X/S and PC.

Along with the Marathon reveal, Bungie also offered a look at the upcoming expansion Destiny 2: The Final Shape. This expansion will serve as the conclusion to the Light and Darkness Saga.

Fans can prepare for a Destiny 2 Showcase, which will stream on all Bungie channels on Aug. 22.

Alan Wake 2 Slated for PlayStation 5 in October

Players can return to the psychological horror world of Alan Wake with a sequel slated for release Oct. 17.

The game will center of horror writer Alan Wake as well as coprotagonist Saga Anderson. Developer Remedy claims this game was built with the power of the PlayStation 5 in mind.

Those wanting to play Alan Wake 2 won’t need to play the original or its 2021 remaster to get the sequel. Developers say no prior knowledge is necessary to enjoy Alan Wake 2.

Sony Returns to Handheld Gaming with Project Q

Sony offered a sneak peak at a new handheld device called Project Q along with a glimpse at new Bluetooth ear buds.

The Project Q features an 8-inch HD screen with all the same buttons as the Dualsense controller. Owners can connect to games on their PlayStation 5 through remote play or wi-fi to play.

The new earbuds will connect with the PlayStation 5 and PC as well as smartphones and other Bluetooth devices.

Details for both devices were scarce but Sony did say it would reveal more in the near future. Both devices, Sony states, are set to release later this year.

Konami Announces Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake and HD Remasters

A remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is headed to PlayStation 5 along with a remastered collection of the first three Metal Gear Solid games.

There was no official release date for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. The showcase did feature a teaser that showcased some of the graphics with the reveal of Solid Snake at the end. This game is slated for PlayStation 5.

Metal Gear Solid Remaster Collection Vol. 1 will include Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3. The collection is set to release this fall.

Host of PlayStation Games Slated for Release Later this Year

The release of Street Fighter 6 is June 2 and Capcom released a story trailer ahead of the game’s release. The trailer keyed in on the World Tour the game will offer.

Immortals of Aveum got a combat trailer that showcased the magic-based shooter gameplay. This game is slated for release on July 20 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

This summer will also be when Tower of Fantasy, an open-world RPG set in a cyberpunk setting. The trailer showcased combat, the world, and characters. The will arrive on PlayStation 4 and 5.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage also had a gameplay trailer, which featured a good look at the desert world, combat, and parkour elements. This was the first look at a game slated for an Oct. 12 release.

The trailer for Helldivers 2, a third-person squad-based shooter set in a science-fiction setting, presented itself as a recruitment video. There is no official release date other than sometime this year. The game is set for PlayStation 5 and PC.

Viewers also got an update on Granblue Fantasy: Relink with a trailer primarily focused on combat. This action RPG is slated to release in the winter of 2023 on PlayStation 4 and 5.

Indie Games Make Their Presence Felt During PlayStation Showcase

A total of 10 indie titles had announcements during the showcase. These indie games included several that will release later this year.

The range of genres for these titles was diverse and covered numerous style of play. The announcements included:

Sony Continues PS VR2 Expansion with Six Announcements

The PS VR2 is getting a deeper library with titles like Resident Evil 4 and Five Nights at Freddy’s expanding their reach onto the system.

Owners of Beat Saber on the PS VR can upgrade their game to the PS VR2 for free. The developers also announced the release of the Queen Music Pack, which features 11 songs from the rock band.

Viewers also got a taste of the VR mode of Resident Evil 4 thanks to a first look trailer. This mode will come via free downloadable content released in the future. There was no official release date.

Arizona Sunshine II also got a first look trailer, taking players back to the apocalyptic deserts of Arizona. This zombie adventure is slated to release later this year.

Crossfire: Sierra Squad showed off its gameplay during its trailer for the arcade shooter. Viewers can expect this game to release this summer.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted 2 looks to improve on its predecessor with new minigames during this horror game. This title is slated for late 2023.

Sony provided more details on the upcoming shooter Synapse, which allows players to wield both weapons and telekinesis power. The game, which will release on July 4, will feature David Hayter and Jennifer Hale in the voice cast.

Additional Announcements and Trailers For Future Titles

Phantom Blade Zero offered a trailer of its hack-and-slash gameplay. The game is slated for PlayStation 5. This title is based off the developer’s original RPG Maker game he made in 2010.

The showcase also featured the first details for the upcoming Fairgame$, a player-vs-player heist game slated for the PlayStation 5 and PC. This is the first new intellectual property from Haven Studios.

Another PvP title making its way to PlayStation 5 and PC is Concord, a science-fiction adventure releasing in 2024. This game comes from Firewalk Studios, which recently joined PlayStation Studios.

Dragon’s Dogma 2, an action RPG, got its first trailer. This game is a sequel to the 2012 release Dragon’s Dogma. There was not release date attached to this trailer.

Square Enix also provided a look at a first-person shooter that appears similar to Splatoon. Foamsters doesn’t have a release date, but the trailer does showcase the party battle gameplay players fire foam at each other.
