An announcement from The Pokémon Company on May 3rd stated it would be sunsetting The Pokémon Trading Card Game Online with a new trading card game filling its void.
The game’s servers will be shut down June 5th, at 9 a.m. PDT. The Pokémon Trading Card Game Online will also be removed from the App Store, Google Play, and Pokemon.com at that time.
Following this shutdown comes the global launch of Pokémon Trading Card Game Live. It launches on June 8th. The announcement states there is an open beta of Pokémon Trading Card Game Live and players can test it out on iOS and Android devices, as well as PCs and Macs.
The announcement also cautions players to open any unopened packs they might have in The Pokémon Trading Card Game Online, as they might not be able to open them in Pokémon Trading Card Game Live. It also says that players should export any decks they wish to save before The Pokémon Trading Card Game Online is shutdown.
There is an FAQ page if anyone reading has any additional questions about the closure and/or how to migrate their account.
Reaction
A highlight for me is that it appears that cards will be available for purchase with in-game currency! As someone who no longer buys Pokémon cards, but still wishes to play online, this excites me. The revamped character customizations look appealing as well, and are a massive upgrade compared to its predecessor.
