Mortal Kombat 1 Showcases New Gameplay, Kameo Fighters

During today’s Summer Games Fest 2023, a new trailer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 provided a first look at the gory new gameplay, as well as a glimpse at the story, roster of fighters, and the new “Kameo” system.

Mortal Kombat 1 is the twelfth main entry in the storied fighting game franchise, and explores a new timeline in which the classic character Liu Kang has risen as a God of Fire.

Some other new story bits include the once former Thunder God Raiden being a mere mortal, Mileena as the older sister of Kitana and the victim of a mysterious disease, and Scorpion and Sub-Zero as blood brothers.

In addition to the truly visceral fatalities and bloody combos that fans have come to expect in the series, a new “Kameo” system will add even more brutality to battles. Players will be able to choose a second character to assist them in fights, which can be summoned with the press of a single button to deliver an extra bit of umph to combos, or even perform fatalities. While some of these Kameo fighters are part of the main roster, most will be callbacks to the franchise’s history, such as classic versions of Sonya Blade, Kano, Jax, Stryker, and even Goro.

Mortal Kombat 1 arrives September 19 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Preorders are available now.
