Ride the Movies was the promise Universal Studios made for years. But every Halloween for more than 30 years, the theme park is taken over by monsters as haunted houses spring up around the park, and the slogan turns to both threat and advice: Never Go Alone. Most of the houses are original, but a few headline houses feature major properties. Last year, for example, John Carpenter’s Halloween, Universal Monsters, The Weeknd, and two recent Blumhouse films all starred in the advertisements.
This year, The Last of Us was the first headline house announced. Notably, this house does not depict the recent television series. This house is explicitly based on the game.
Now that the floodgates are open, we have to ask: what video games could come to Halloween Horror Nights in the future?
Universal Studios Japan regularly features attractions promoting Capcom games. Can you imagine a haunted house which lets you wander a recreation of Racoon City, in a maze accurately based on the Raccoon City Police Department from the second game? Wouldn’t that be cool, if such a thing were possible?
What if I told you that versions of that haunted house were a semi-regular tradition at Japan’s Halloween Horror Nights? And that you don’t just walk through, guests are armed with laser guns and asked to fight their way through to the exit?
It is such a fan favorite to be repeatedly brought back year after year. Bringing it to the American parks should be possible, especially with the new popularity the franchise is enjoying.
But let’s take-off on a flight of fancy. Universal Studios has the rights to Nintendo characters.
A Metroid house would be incredible. The games already often verge on horror, and living the experience for yourself would fit right into Halloween Horror Nights. Recent haunted houses have shown the huge monsters that can be beautifully brought to life via animatronics and puppets. Consider a house with space pirates (actors), a few metroids (puppets), and a show-stopper Ridley at the climax (one large animatronic).
