Sonic Superstars Gives 2D Platformer a Brand New Look

SEGA announced Sonic Superstars, a 2D action platformer in the vein of the series’ roots, with a brand new makeover coming later in 2023.

Revealed at Summer Game Fest 2023, Sonic Superstars is coming to PlayStation 5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC this fall. Unlike fellow 2D platformers Sonic Mania and Sonic Origins, fans won’t have to wait for a physical release post-launch. It’s also the first full-price 2D Sonic game in a very long time, with a $59.99 price point.

Players can pick between Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose to battle Dr. Eggman and returning iconic opponent Fang. Longtime Sonic fans may recall Fang from his first debut in Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble on the SEGA Game Gear and his subsequent appearance as a playable character in Sonic the Fighters.

Sonic Superstars, set on the North Star Islands, promises never-before-seen landscapes, implying that, despite the compilation-style name, we will be dashing through entirely new levels rather than the usual suspects like Green Hill and Chemical Plant.

The trailer also showed what appears to be special stages inspired by Sonic The Hedgehog’s revolving Special Stages and a 3D Special Stage.

The updated HD visuals look terrific in motion, but the real test will be how it performs.
