The Legend of Zelda franchise generally has been know to have some bangers when it comes to music. I regularly listen to video game OSTs (original sound track), and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has been on repeat since the game’s launch. However, with all its similarities to its predecessor, I wonder: which of the two has the better soundtrack–Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom?
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild‘s music was initially met with some (valid) criticism in that it leaned heavily on ambient sounds versus detailed themes; however, when we look at the OST with a critical lens, it makes sense. The title revolves around Link waking up to a world where nature reclaims most of Hyrule after the Calamity. Nintendo was intentional with nature’s ambient sounds. Aside from that, there are loads of amazing tracks, such as the Champion’s themes and Kass’ music.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel, so we can expect ambient nature sounds to continue. The title also comes with fresh themes as well as fun remixes. With that said, some could argue Breath of the Wild has the better music since Tears of the Kingdom remixes many of them. For example, the dungeons and boss battles contains themes from Ganondorf, the Champions, and/or the Divine Beasts.
In my opinion, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom squeaks by as the better soundtrack–not by much, mind you. What swayed my decision is the bombastic opening, the dissonant Zonai sounds in various tracks, and the personality the dungeon and boss music brings to the table. (I also was not much of a fan of the technology-based sounds of the Guardians!)
