Boss Rush Banter: Which The Legend of Zelda Art Style Would You Like to Revisit?

2–4 minutes

The Legend of Zelda is a unique franchise that differs from game to game.

One area that often changes regularly is the art style. People often care deeply about how a game looks along with how it plays.

Comparing art styles is a popular factor to debate right up there with your favorite version of Princess Zelda or Link. Everyone has their favorite while many also have one they don’t like.

So, which art style would you like Nintendo to revisit in a future game?

For this conversation, it’s important to note that games didn’t have much of an art style prior to Ocarina of Time because of graphical limitations at the time. There were art styles in the promotional content for each of these games. Or maybe some consider that an art style in and of itself.

Personally, I would love a return to The Wind Waker art style.

This art style got a lot of flack at release. Both Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask were welcoming Link and company into a darker, 3D world while the realistic Space World demo in 2000 set expectations high.

Rather than embracing the darkness, Nintendo went the cartoony route with The Wind Waker. Many, including myself, thought this was a step back in the franchise. Twenty years later, the joke was on all of us.

The Wind Waker art style has become the one that has aged better than any other. The Wind Waker HD looked gorgeous on the Wii U and many are still clamoring for this title.

I’d love to see a return to this style because it invokes a lot of nostalgia as well as it would shake up the status quo again. I do think many would better receive the style much better this time around.

Other unique styles include ones from Twilight Princess, A Link Between Worlds, the remake of Link’s Awakening, and even the ones from the 3D remakes of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask.

Tears of the Kingdom has cemented a new age for The Legend of Zelda, but many will still be looking for a change in something moving forward. I think art style would be a great opportunity to try the Breath of the Wild format with a new coat of paint.

But what about you? Which art style would you like to revisit in a future game? Let us know in the comments below or head over to our Discord channel to join the conversation.

I’d love a return to The Wind Waker style, at least for a spin-off.
