Boss Rush Banter: What’s the Best Sports Game Franchise of All Time?

Sports and video games — two fixtures in our society that have shaped us into the people we are today. If only these two juggernauts could somehow come together… oh wait, they did!

The two have been intertwined since the invention of video games (heck, the first one ever was a sports game!) and have let users live out their dreams of playing their favorite sports all from the comfort of their favorite couch.

What’s even more incredible is as video games have evolved, the world has been treated to some amazing sports game franchises that offer such different experiences that it’s so hard to say one is better than the other.

But we have to ask: What’s the best sports game franchise of all time?

Madden

The game that holds an iron fist over the gridiron, Madden is the premiere destination for all things American Football. Originally launching in 1988, there’s a reason this game has held its ground for generations of NFL enthusiasts. The game has entranced fans with its memorable in-game highlights and it always leaves you coming back for more. As someone who has played this series let me just say that there really isn’t any feeling like scoring a touchdown with your team.

NBA 2K

If you have any sense of pop culture, you’ve heard of 2K. The series has captivated America for, well, all of the 2000s and it just doesn’t slow down. The graphics continue to get better, people are obsessed with MyPlayer, and references from the franchise have found their way into popular vernacular when it comes to talking about the NBA (i.e.- “Greenbeam” and “VC”).

MLB The Show

An absolute fan-favorite for MLB lovers. Whether it’s hitting home runs, stealing bases, or throwing strikeouts, this game gives users the chance to feel like their favorite players. This series used to be exclusive to PlayStation owners, but in 2021 San Diego Studios opened its door to other console users and some may argue the world is a better place for it.

WII Sports

If you were there, this franchise needs no defense. The Wii was flat-out awesome and the sports game is still talked about to this day. It only had five games (tennis, boxing, baseball, golf, and bowling) but no one ever got tired of it. Sadly, the Wii was discontinued in 2013, but its memory will always live on in the hearts of its players.

I’m not into wrestling, but the (sometimes outstanding) WWE games are also something special across a long period of time. They’re not ordinary competition sports, but their games are (when they’re good) unparalleled for capturing the spirit of the source material.
