With September, Spooky Season (Observed) has arrived. While we wait for the autumnal chill, it’s time to break out the apple cider, the spiced hot drinks, and all of the horror media we can handle.
What horror media defines your Halloween? What do you need to play, read, or watch every Halloween?
I always make a point to watch one of the Universal Horror series every year, ideally from the all-time classic start to the all-time classic finish, produced about two decades later, where Abbott and Costello meet the monster. What lies between the two is not always up to the same quality, but they have the same shadow-consumed charm.
I am always drawn back to the Silver John stories of Manly Wade Wellman. Beautifully written and constructed short stories about a musician traipsing along the American south, encountering American cryptids and magic, and always triumphing by way of kindness and decency.
Halloween always draws me back to Cultist Simulator. Alongside Call of the Sea, it’s one of my favorite Lovecraftian video games.
