Every so often, a report surfaces indicating a reboot of The Office is in the works and each time, the rumor fizzles out.

This time seems a bit different.

What makes this time different is original showrunner Greg Daniels is reportedly attached to the project.

The prospect of having Daniels attached should offer some optimism about the project. After all, Daniels was a key part of making the show a success in the first place.

There’s still a lot of skepticism on if this reboot could break the trend or not. Reboots and remakes don’t have the best reputation thanks to a multitude of reasons, but having Daniels attached does help dispel some of this worry.

Why? Because Daniels has earned the clout to have people trust him.

Prior to joining The Office, Daniels enjoyed stints as a writer on The Simpsons and Saturday Night Live. Daniels became so invested in developing King of the Hill that co-creator Mike Judge had no choice but to make him co-creator. He’ll return for the reboot.

After his time at The Office, Daniels went on to co-create Parks and Recreation and worked on other shows such as Space Force, People of Earth, and Upload.

And his work on The Office can’t be understated.

The podcast Office Ladies with Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey has revealed plenty of backstage details that Daniels cares deeply about The Office and fought off network interference as often as he could. He did return to the show to improve its quality a bit in the ninth season.

All of these accolades have made Daniels someone who has earned trust to handle a reboot of the beloved sitcom. I’m still not sold on the idea of a reboot, but if Daniels truly is attached, then I have optimism.

In a recent discussion with my friend BlocksGamingReviews, we discussed what a reboot needs to do in order to be successful. It needs to adapt rather than try to recapture the magic the show once had.

This is a difficult task and so many reboots have failed at this task. Still, there are some that have been successful such as Twin Peaks, Battlestar Galactica, and Cobra Kai as each one did a good job establishing its own voice.

Heck, even The Office was seen as a tacky reboot of a British sitcom in its first season. Daniels ensured that mantra wouldn’t stick and I think he can do it again if given the chance.
