According to a report from Bloomberg, Bungie fired Chris Barrett due to sexual misconduct. At press time, a minimum of eight women have come forward to describe his unwanted advances, aggressive texting, and offers to advance their careers. Prior to his departure in March, Barrett worked as director on the Marathon reboot, which, like Concord, was a high-budget, live service multiplayer shooter initiative from a Sony-backed company.
Allegedly, Barrett would call women employees attractive, requested they play truth-or-dare with him, and suggested he could help advance their careers. He would aggressively text women at the studio, mixing professional and personal matters. “In interviews, multiple women who reported Barrett said the advances were unwanted and that they felt uncomfortable because Barrett was significantly more powerful than they were at the company,” Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier notes.
Barrett has been employed by Bungie since 1999, initially as an artist, then as director on Halo and Destiny, then on the board prior to Sony purchasing it in 2022.
Bloomberg reached out to Sony for comment. The spokesperson’s response did not address Barrett specifically, but noted that Sony takes “all complaints of misconduct very seriously. It is our policy and practice to investigate every complaint promptly and take action based on the findings of our investigation.”
According to Bloomberg, Bungie employees were not informed of Barrett’s actions: initially they were told that Barrett left on sabbatical, and only later discovered his company accounts had been disabled.
