It’s been over 13 years since Lost went off the airwaves, but the door seems to still be open for a potential return.
Let me be clear: There has not been any indication of that happening from anyone involved with the show. That said, the propensity for reboots does have to bring up the question of a potential return someday.
While the possibility may exist, the actual questions isn’t whether it can be done, but rather if it should be. What do you think?
A couple of months after Lost went off the air, producers released an epilogue titled The New Man in Charge.
This 11-minute webisode centered on some events after the series ended including Benjamin Linus and Hurley’s efforts as protectors of the island. It also provided a reunion of Walt Lloyd with Hurley.
In true Lost fashion, this created plenty of questions with minimal answers. To this day, we have yet to see any build out of this. The show only provided us with this epilogue showcasing Hurley and Ben’s reign beginning and some dialogue in the series finale where the two compliment each other on their time as protectors.
If we ever do return to the world of Lost, I think it should be in this storyline. Furthermore, it should be a mini-series as to not overstay its welcome.
Ben and Hurley is a dynamic I’d love to see played out. Ben is in search of redemption for all he did throughout the series while Hurley seemingly perpetuates good at every turn.
We get inklings of how Hurley was as protector based on him awakening the other survivors in the series finale. The below scene shows Hurley as he confronts Charlie during the flash sideways in the series finale, a glimpse into how Hurley operated as protector.
I get that not everyone loved Lost and many had issues with the finale. The recent surge in reboots has also left many with a bad taste in their mouth regarding reboots. There is, however, precedent for this to work.
Twin Peaks is a similar show to Lost in that it had a huge following and garnered a lot of talk at the water cooler the next day. Twin Peaks ended in 1991 and had a movie in 1992, but that didn’t stop the creators from returning to it in 2018. That return garnered a lot of praise from viewers.
I think Lost could follow a similar path. To me, the best format is a mini-series because I always thought Lost worked so well because it was episodic. Doing a movie would kneecap it because I think the story to tell needs a longer approach than what a movie can convey.
I also think the show needs a storyline such as Ben, Hurley, and Walt adjusting into their new roles. An anthology would not fit here, but it could work.
It’s always risky to return to a show or movie that has been dormant for a while. I think the approach should be a calculated one with people attached to it who are passionate and know the original show.
Anything else would be a disservice to the fans and the story.
