It’s everyone’s favorite pastime: speculating on the successor to the Nintendo Switch.
It seems like every few months, someone else is leaking information about the console’s successor. This time, however, it does feel like it’s closer than ever.
With that in mind, it’s time for everyone’s other favorite pastime: speculating how the new console will compare and contrast with the old one.
There’s a lot of desired additions many would like to see added to the Switch Junior including enhanced graphics, continued hybrid functionality, and specific game titles. One I’d like to talk about is a trophy system.
Nintendo has always prided itself on being different and zagging whenever other zig. You can see the delineation start about the time of the Wii as it took gaming in a new direction.
The Switch has always been its own beast and has done remarkably well for trying to think outside the box. It’s done that by largely not trying to replicate what PlayStation and Xbox do.
All that said, I do think the Switch the Second would benefit from adding a trophy system.
I didn’t realize what I was missing out on until I bought a PlayStation 5. There’s something satisfying about hearing that chime when you achieve something, especially if it was unexpected.
I found that trophies not only give you a sense of accomplishment, but they also help approach games in a new way.
Trophies on the PS5 can lead me to find new aspects of the game I didn’t know existed. I didn’t realize Uncle Ben’s grave was in Marvel’s Spider-Man until I saw it appear on a trophy list.
Games like Tears of the Kingdom or Super Mario Odyssey could benefit from having trophies as there is so much to do and discover. I love stumbling across discoveries, but having a trophy would add to the sense of accomplishment.

Nintendo has explored trophy systems in ways over the years. The Metroid Prime Trilogy on the Wii has a chime that appears once you defeat a certain boss or obtain a certain item. Super Mario Odyssey loaded up its game with trophy-like moons that require players to do similar tasks they would for trophies on other consoles.
I understand some saying adding trophies would make Nintendo too much like the other consoles or it would ruin games because it doesn’t allow the player to choose how to play. These are valid concerns, but I don’t see a trophy system doing that.
Nintendo has so much else that makes it unique that adding trophies hardly seems like conforming. The company could even put its own twist on trophies, making them mushrooms or different colored coins that yield rewards.
As for ruining gameplay, trophies don’t dictate how I play a game on the PS5. Rather, it’s a nice sense of accomplishment when I do get one, but I’m hardly chasing platinum achievements. I play how I want regardless of trophies.
I doubt the Child of Switch will include a trophy system and that’s OK. I would love to see it, however, as I’ve come to love it on the PlayStation 5. Who knows, it could become a popular feature that Nintendo continues to make its own if they do opt to start.
But what about you? Should the Switch’s successor include a trophy system? Let us know in the comments below or head over to our Discord channel to join the conversation.
