Sure, it’s been sort of a joke for a while, as Nintendo fans have been stewing over “Switch 2” rumors for years. However, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa promised that the successor to their current console will be announced by the end of the fiscal year. That’s about four more months or less from now. Will the impending announcement negate holiday sales numbers for their current console?
Let’s get the obvious out of the way–of course Nintendo Switch consoles will sell like hot cakes this holiday season. My question encourages us all to dig a little deeper as far as how well they sell compared to, say, the last seven winter holidays.
In their latest Corporate Management Policy Briefing on November 5th, they adjusted their hardware forecast from 13.5 million units to 12.5 million units. When looking at trends, Nintendo saw a dip in trend for fourth quarter 2024.

I also crunched the year-over-year percent growth of all Nintendo Switch hardware based off their historical data found on their website.
- Q3 2017-2018: 449 %
- Q3 2018-2019: 12.6 %
- Q3 2019-2020: 24 %
- Q3 2020-2021: 37 %
- Q3 2021-2022: (-) 20 %
- Q3 2022-2023: (-) 22 %
- Q3 2023-2024: (-) 12.6 %
Nintendo acknowledges the lengthy tail of the Switch, and it is only natural for overall sales to decline after almost eight years. While the company doesn’t speculate the impact on the upcoming Switch 2 announcement, I feel that Nintendo fans who are in the know, are more likely than ever to hold off buying a Nintendo Switch this holiday season.
Therefore, the simple fact that a new Nintendo Switch console will be announced in less than four months will likely dull the sales numbers for Holiday 2024, but it certainly won’t stop the average family from getting one.
I will be curious to see the Q4 2024 Nintendo Switch sales numbers and compare them to Q4 numbers from previous years. Please share your thoughts with us on our Boss Rush Facebook Group or our Boss Rush Discord.
