Has the topic of the Nintendo Switch successor gotten stale? Maybe. Does it prevent us from talking about it? Absolutely not! As the days inch closer to a reveal and rumors about its specs and looks swirl, I wanted to have some fun guessing what the main launch title could be.
Nintendo launched the Switch with titles such as 1-2 Switch, Snipperclips, and most importantly, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The sales with this new open-world Zelda game skyrocketed and help bolster the beginning of a long, successful life for this console. With the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in 2023 and Echoes of Wisdom in 2024, I would say a new mainline Zelda game would not be part of the Switch 2 launch day lineup.
There’s been a lot of attention paid to the Donkey Kong franchise lately, especially since The Super Mario. Bros Movie. The latest Super Nintendo World expansion was revealed, and it’s all about Donkey Kong! Nintendo also announced Donkey Kong Country Returns HD for a January 2025 release, and they recently added several DK titles to NSO: Donkey Kong Land, Donkey Kong Land 2, and Donkey Kong Land 3. The odds of a new Donkey Kong game early in the Switch 2’s life is highly probable, but with the HD port in January, I’m guessing this IP won’t be part of the launch day line-up.
I hate to be cliche, but a new 3D Mario game may very well be Nintendo’s main launch day title. There hasn’t been a new 3D Mario since 2017, and the new 2D Mario—Super Mario Bros. Wonder–dropped in 2023. From a timing standpoint, it makes sense, and why wouldn’t Nintendo lead their new console with their number one mascot?
One “riskier” option that I would like to see is the Switch 2 launch with Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. It is riskier since Metroid doesn’t have a large fan base like with Mario; however, the positive reception to Metroid Dread provides some hope. Not only that, but I feel that this sci-fi FPS would better showcase all the upgraded specs to prove that the Switch 2 can handle games with a higher “demand” on the system. Lastly, it doesn’t hurt that Piggyback is working on Metroid Prime 1-3: A Visual Retrospective. It’s pre-order date states it will release July 31st, 2025. If Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is not a launch day title, maybe we will see Metroid Prime 2 and 3 remake as a consolation prize?
