Capcom is one of the few and lucky companies that Nintendo trusted with the keys to one of their beloved franchises: Zelda. This partnership led to The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages, and a remake of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past & Four Swords. It’s been a long time; however, with major Capcom titles hitting the Switch 2 on launch day this year, perhaps this rekindled relationship could spark a new Zelda collaboration…and if not, it should!

In the coming months, Capcom will release Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata. Both titles are massive, highly anticipated, and will launch on the Switch 2 on day one alongside other consoles, hopefully heralding a promising future for third-party games on a Nintendo console. Moreover, there will be amiibo associated with these two games.
As a whole, Nintendo and Capcom always have a good relationship with one another, but their working relationship seemed to deepen with the timed-exclusive launch of Monster Hunter Rise on the Switch and several amiibo launches for Rise and Street Fighter 6. Aso, despite their warm working relationship, many of Capcom’s larger games either never make it to, or gets ported at a much later time, to Nintendo consoles such as Onimusha (the first two games are now on the Switch), Monster Hunter Wilds, and Resident Evil 7 and 8 (which are coming to the Switch 2 this month as well). Lastly, a working relationship may be all well and good; however, until the Switch 2, perhaps Nintendo hardware got in the way of day one game launches on their systems.
While there has been no news or even a suggestion of another Capcom Zelda game, I think this would be a prime opportunity to collaborate, and here are a few reasons why.
- Zelda is about to celebrate 30 years; its debut title released on February 21st, 1986.
- Nintendo has increasingly been willing to allow second- and third-party developers to work on their IP such as MercurySteam (Metroid Dread) and Grezzo (The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening Remake and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom).
- Increased system power with the Switch 2, allows larger Capcom games to release day one, only further improving their relationship.
- The Zelda Oracle games hit a 25-year milestone as well
- There were initially three Oracle games planned to reference to the Triforce. That third Oracle game never came to fruition.
- Nintendo is working on their next mainline game and will need alternative titles to fill the time gap.
While Nintendo is hard at work at the next mainline Zelda game, we are left waiting for ports, remakes, or spin-offs to keep the impressive track record of one Zelda game per year (at least in recent years). Whether it is a reimagining of the Oracle games, a third Oracle title, or a brand-new title, Capcom and Nintendo have a grand opportunity that would be wasteful not to consider.
