While Resident Evil 4 couldn’t be any further from any Legend of Zelda game, I couldn’t help but think of Nintendo’s golden franchise after completing Separate Ways. Separate Ways is Resident Evil 4 remake’s DLC that released September 21st, 2023 for only $9.99 USD. You play Ada Wong’s side of the story while Leon is off saving the President’s daughter. This is where Nintendo should look closely at this DLC and take notes.
Let me explain. Separate Ways occurs during the events in Resident Evil 4, but follows Ada Wong’s escapades. It fully fleshes out the story by providing that “other side”, filling in the blanks of when we briefly saw her when we played as Leon. Ada is a strong, female lead, and this DLC proves her capability is beyond looking good in heels and witty banter.
Now, what have some Zelda fans have been asking for?
Playing as Zelda herself.
I think the Separate Ways DLC is something Zelda could emulate–if Nintendo doesn’t want to stray too far from their strict formula, how about create a DLC where you play Zelda’s side of the story? There are many games where Zelda is an active character, off doing her part: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as Sheik, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker as Tetra, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword by traveling on the surface to purify herself as a reincarnation of the goddess Hylia, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild while trying to discover her sealing powers.
Can you imagine a 4-6 hour DLC where you play as Zelda down in the surface from Skyward Sword? You could travel with young Impa while fending off baddies and maybe Lord Ghirahim himself!
I strongly feel that Resident Evil 4‘s Separate Ways is an excellent example of extra content from a fresh perspective in a manageable, bite-sized adventure. I know Zelda fans would appreciate the additional fleshing out of the story and lore.
