Nintendo has had a lot of different IPs creating new innovations, impressive experiences, and a plethora of varying genres to draw off. Making games off IP’s that have been successful in the past is a great strategy for sales but overdoing this practice, some past games and genres are left on pause or are not even considered. So, what genres seem to have missed the Nintendo Switch and what could Nintendo bring differently to its future console?
Here are a few thoughts on some genres that I think need some needed attention.
Horror:
- Examples: Geist, Luigi’s Mansion, Eternal Darkness
Nintendo has had their fair share of horror games. Most of the IPs I currently think of came during the GameCube era. With a small variety of horror games, I would really like Nintendo to create something new and potentially horrifying in a good story and gameplay way. With popular horror games like Dead Space, Resident Evil, and The Evil Within in existence, Nintendo could have the potential to really make a scary and memorable experience with either a new IP or a twist on a current one.
FPS:
- Examples: Geist, Metroid Prime, Goldeneye: 007
When you think of First-Person shooters what games come to mind? Doom, Call of Duty, Halo, these titles are what come to the forefront of my mind, and I guarantee it’s what comes to most games and even non-gamers minds as well. Nintendo has a few IP’s that stand out and are great but for the most part they are not on the top of most peoples lists and this is why I hope Nintendo would create a new IP that can change the industry much like Splatoon has for third-person team shooters. I believe that Metroid Prime 4 will be a step in the right direction with all the well-known talent that is behind the upcoming game.
Visual Novel/Walking Simulation:
- Examples: Another Code Recollection, Elite Beat Agents, Detective Club
These genres over the years have quickly become a favorite of mine since I have become a parent and have a lot less time for longer more drawn-out games than in the past. I have enjoyed games such as Fire Watch, Life is Strange, and Beacon Pines. To my knowledge there are not many if any games in this genre and I think it is about time Nintendo made a story-based game that is the main highlight of the game. Let’s hope for something in the future.
Whatever Nintendo’s next consoles is I look forward to whatever may be on the horizon, and I hope these will include some genres to fill in the gaps that are currently missing, lacking, or need more variety. Can’t wait to see where the next few years may have in store for us.
What genre do you think is missing or lacking from Nintendo? What is something you personally would like to see from Nintendo? What do you think they currently are doing well in now? We shall see what is to come. Let us know your thoughts.
