Get ready, Overwatch fans, because the Overwatch Esports scene is about to undergo a transformation in 2024. Blizzard Entertainment is bringing a wave of excitement with the Overwatch Champions Series (OWCS), promising an international spectacle that will redefine competitive gaming.
Overwatch Champions Series: A Global Showdown
At the heart of this esports extravaganza is the Overwatch Champions Series – a premier international competitive circuit open to players across North America (NA); Europe, Middle East, and North Africa (EMEA); and Asia.
The 2024 season will feature multiple competitive stages, each region hosting its own set of Open Qualifiers.
These qualifiers offer players the chance to form teams and battle for a coveted spot in the Main Event. This leads to two live, in-person international events that will bring regions together for the pinnacle of Overwatch play.
NA and EMEA: A Deeper Dive into the Action
In North America and EMEA, teams will engage in four competitive stages throughout the year, complemented by two international OWCS events. The stages include online Open Qualifiers and Main Events, where circuit points are up for grabs. The more points a team accumulates, the higher their standing on the leaderboards and seeds for international event qualification.
The OWCS stages in NA and EMEA are set to feature three tournament phases: Swiss, Groups, and the Main Event. FACEIT, a recently announced partner, will play a role in orchestrating an 8-team double elimination regional tournament, promising an exciting and streamlined Overwatch 2 FACEIT experience for players, starting March 1, 2024.
Asia: Tailoring Experiences for Diversity
Asia brings a unique twist to the OWCS with three regional subdivisions: South Korea, Japan, and Pacific. Tailored tournaments in each subdivision, which WDG will operate, will determine the best teams advancing to the OWCS Asia Championship tournaments throughout the year. WARA.GG will serve as the exclusive registration platform, offering a dedicated space for match-related information and engagement with the Overwatch Esports community.
International Live Events at DreamHack
Partnering with DreamHack, OWCS will host two live international tournaments in the 2024 season – one in the summer and another in the fall. The OWCS Major at DreamHack Dallas from May 31 to June 2 promises an unforgettable experience. Additionally, the Season Finals will make a European debut at DreamHack Stockholm later in the year, marking a monumental moment for the Overwatch Esports community.
Beyond OWCS: Additional Overwatch Esports Programs
In North America and EMEA, players can expect a plethora of opportunities to engage in Overwatch Esports, thanks to new initiatives through FACEIT. The spring season is set to bring fresh and exciting ways to compete, with more details to be announced throughout the year.
In the Asia Region, alongside OWCS, WDG Esports introduces the WDG Cup – a knockout competition open to all teams in the Asia region during the OWCS offseason. Additionally, the WDG Scholastic Tournament provides a regular competitive platform for students representing their schools and scholastic communities.
Mark Your Calendars: A Year Packed with Action
The OWCS Open Qualifiers for NA and EMEA kick-off shortly after the Season of Calling All Heroes concludes in February, with competition starting in March. Meanwhile, Asia’s Open Qualifiers begin in February. Specific dates and further details for OWCS and FACEIT programming will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
Get ready to embark on a thrilling journey through the Overwatch Esports landscape in 2024. The stage is set, the teams are ready, and the Overwatch community is in for a gaming revolution like never before. Stay tuned for updates and announcements – the Overwatch Champions Series is about to take the gaming world by storm!
