Lethal Company is a game primarily about scavenging moons to sell to an unknown company players are employed by. Strange and hostile creatures inhabit these environments that impede on the player’s mission to meet the company quota. This game has taken the gaming industry by storm and the modding community has gone wild on making the game even better. However, how good is Lethal Company as its vanilla base game? What are the highs and lows of playing it, and does it meet the quota for player satisfaction?
A great part about Lethal Company is its co-op ability. I feel the game shines the brightest when played with friends or even strangers. It’s a game that makes people feel more connected, and nothing more helps people get along than a great game with some scares and laughs.
Lobbies can be created to connect people to play together without needing any networking. Although the proximity chat makes it more amusing and difficult to survive, it is not necessarily needed for people to enjoy the game. Sound is not the sole mechanic to attracting enemies, and there are quite a few in-game noise-making objects that still make it difficult for players to be quiet.
A downside to the game is its difficulty to play single-player. Enemies are prepared to face multiple people which makes it hard for a single player to overcome them. Though, this difficulty can also be seen as a rewarding challenge by other players who enjoy beating the odds.
Another downside to the game is that it doesn’t really seem to end. Similar to other co-op games, it is a similar routine with some situational differences that don’t really lead to a conclusion. The quota just keeps increasing. For players who want a resolution and a story about why the world is the way it is, this game doesn’t really give that.
However, a selling point of the game is how the little bread crumbs given make room for a lot of creative freedom. The terminal does give some context to the creatures and the world players are dumped in, but it leaves space for players to speculate what happened and how these creatures came to be.
Players go into the world mostly unaware of what they’re going to face, and that makes it enjoyable. The game itself has such a varied amount of creatures that each visit onto a moon feels different despite being a similar landscape. It’s a nerve-wracking game that tests a player’s skill and luck.
The developer is also still including more creatures and mechanics in the game to diversify the experience and make it more enjoyable. Although, at times, the game can feel repetitive, the game can suddenly turn around and change its pace. The creatures greatly push the game to go above and beyond in creating win/lose situations for players to experience.
The game really challenges players to learn about its world and survive in it. Players don’t have to manage thirst or hunger, but they certainly do have to manage blood-thirsty monsters. The game lends itself to a great, friendly experience with its thrills and scares.
If I include the modding available for Lethal Company, it becomes an incredibly addicting adventure of life and death and meeting quotas. What do you think about the game Lethal Company?
