I remember as a kid wanting to play Pokémon on the Game Boy, but I did not have the handheld system nor the money to purchase one. I had received a SNES the prior year and was happy that I had that, but watching the cartoon, seeing ads in my Nintendo Power, and hearing friends talk about it, drove me more to obtain it somehow.
I had been invited to a birthday party, so I had gone out with my parents to pick a great gift out. Showed up for the party and while there I saw something I had not seen before, a Super Game Boy. I asked my friend what it was, and he said it plays Game Boy Games through the SNES through the television. Stunned I asked where he got it, and after a few minutes of talking he asked if I wanted to buy it? He had recently got a new Game Boy and did not use it much. I asked how much, and he sold it to me for twenty dollars. This was a great memorable purchase and how I eventually got to play Pokémon Red.
Besides the Super Game Boy which allowed you to play Game Boy and Game Boy Color games through the SNES, Nintendo has also released the Game Boy Advanced player. This was the added hardware attachment to the bottom of a GameCube. It was also a very fun way to enjoy your handheld games and to allow others to see and interact with you while you played locally. This was the last time we have seen the handheld games and console pair physically to play.
So will Nintendo repeat past success with a pattern that seems to work in everyone’s favor, hopefully time will tell. Having a new console that allows the player to insert his/her own games from the DS and 3DS library into a successor of the Nintendo Switch would greatly enhance the system at launch and provide value all around. A card slot that reads DS, 3DS, Switch, and the new systems games would allow Nintendo to bridge all the legacy handhelds into one and become Switch supreme. If this could be done directly on the handheld this would be ideal but if not, then at least make it available through the dock. This also would rely on the new system to have dual screens somehow or using the tablet and television in some combination like the Wii U.
Whatever Nintendo decides to do with future and legacy content, I hope it makes sense and feels natural. Do you think this is a possibility?
