In the 90’s I spent a lot of time playing games on the SNES and the N64. I played all sorts of different genres by myself, with my siblings, and with my friends for hours. It was a great time to be alive for sure. Some of the best games you played with someone else, and it was those games you really remember sticking out in the end. One of those franchises remains in my memory today, but could we ever see it again?
Renting games was a popular thing to do in the 90’s and I remember one Friday night heading to the local VideoBiz store and picking up a copy of a fighting game called Clayfighter. Intrigued by the name, we rented it and as soon as we inserted it into the SNES we knew this was going to be a blast. The music was the first thing you notice when you see the roster of clay characters that really ramped up the esthetic of the game. With characters like Taffy, Blue Suede Goo, Ickybod Clay, and Bad Mr. Frosty, you knew the weekend was going to be wild and that you had something to talk about with your friends on Monday. The concept was taking shape before our eyes, and we enjoyed every minute until we had to return it.
I remember one Christmas we were given Clayfighter 2: Judgement Clay, an absolutely amazing sequel. Again, the music was great with an arcade like feel to it. In stepped some newcomers like Hoppy the Battle Bunny, Nanaman, Blob, and Kangoo. This sequel was amazing, looked good and felt great to play and the tag lines still play in my head like, Hoppy’s “Spinning Carrot,” Tiny’s “Medicine Ball,” and the Blob’s “You’re Going Down.” It was so memorable.
During the N64 period developer Interplay Entertainment brought us Clayfighter 63 1/3 in 1997, which ended up being the last game in the series. This last game had new characters including guest charters from other games such as Earthworm Jim and Boogerman. The game wasn’t well received because of poor gameplay mechanics, lacked depth, and seemed rushed. Many people who loved the other games in the series enjoyed their wacky animated antics but ultimately due to the games downfalls it did not receive another release. We also know that a cancelled project from 2015 and 2016 has not been revived or talked about publicly, so a future title is seemingly not likely.
